Converging chest press: how to do it right

On the converging machine your arms move towards each other as you press, like with dumbbells, but along a guided path. It's a safe way to load your chest without needing a spotter.

Step by step

  1. Adjust the seat so the handles are at mid-chest height.
  2. Sit with your back against the pad and your shoulder blades pulled together and down.
  3. Press the handles forward until your arms are almost straight.
  4. Return slowly until you feel your chest stretch, without letting the weight touch down.

Tip: Many converging machines let you press one arm at a time: useful if one side is weaker.

Common mistakes

Seat too low

With the handles above your shoulders, your shoulders work too much.

Back leaving the pad

Leaning forward takes work off your chest. Keep your back on the pad.

Locking your elbows

Stop just before fully straight to keep tension on your chest.

FAQ

Is the machine worse than the barbell?

Not for building muscle. Barbells and dumbbells demand more stability, but the machine lets you train close to failure safely.
