Pec deck: how to do it right

The pec deck brings your arms together in front of your chest on a guided machine. It isolates your chest without your triceps helping, so it's a good exercise to finish a session.

Step by step

  1. Adjust the seat so the handles are at chest height.
  2. Sit with your back against the pad and grab the handles or rest your forearms on the pads, depending on the model.
  3. With elbows slightly bent and fixed, bring your arms together in front of your chest.
  4. Squeeze your chest for a moment when the handles meet.
  5. Open your arms slowly until you feel a stretch in your chest, without going behind your shoulder line.

Tip: Use a weight you can control on the way back: the opening phase is where you feel your chest most.

Common mistakes

Seat set wrong

With the handles above your shoulders, your shoulders work too much. Set them at chest height.

Opening too far back

Stretching your arms behind your body strains the shoulder. Stop when your elbows line up with your torso.

Back leaving the pad

Leaning forward to bring your arms together takes work off your chest. Keep your back against the pad.

FAQ

Does the pec deck build muscle?

Yes, as a complement to pressing exercises. It works well for sets of 10–15 reps at the end of a chest session.
