Step by step

  1. Place your hands on the floor slightly wider than your shoulders, fingers forward.
  2. Straighten your legs and make a straight line from head to heels, squeezing glutes and abs.
  3. Lower your chest towards the floor, elbows at about 45° from your body.
  4. Go down until your chest is a few centimetres from the floor.
  5. Press until your arms are straight, keeping your body in line.

Tip: Too hard? Start with your hands on a bench or knees on the floor and gradually lower the height.

Common mistakes

Sagging hips

If your hips drop, your lower back suffers. Squeeze glutes and abs.

Elbows flared out

Flaring your elbows to 90° loads the shoulder. Bring them to about 45°.

Half reps

Going down only a little takes work away. Fewer full push-ups are better.
