Straight-arm pulldown: how to do it right

In the straight-arm pulldown you bring a bar down from overhead to your thighs with your arms almost straight. It isolates your lats with no help from your biceps.

Step by step

  1. Attach a straight bar or rope to the high pulley and grab it with straight arms.
  2. Step back and lean your torso slightly, elbows slightly bent.
  3. Sweep the bar down in an arc to your thighs, squeezing your lats.
  4. Return slowly until your arms are at head height.

Tip: It's a good exercise to warm up your back before pull-ups or pulldowns.

Common mistakes

Bending your elbows

If your elbows bend, it becomes a triceps pushdown. Keep the angle fixed.

Moving your torso

Your torso stays still; only your arms move.

Going too high

Stop when your arms reach head height.

FAQ

Bar or rope?

Both work. The rope lets you spread your hands at the end for a little more range.
