Lateral raise: how to do it right

Lateral raises lift your arms out to the sides. They're the best exercise for the side of your shoulder, the part that gives you width.

Step by step

  1. Stand with a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
  2. With your elbows slightly bent, raise your arms out to the sides to shoulder height.
  3. Keep your hands slightly in front of your body, not fully out in a T.
  4. Lower slowly.

Tip: Think about pushing the dumbbells towards the walls, not the ceiling.

Common mistakes

Swinging

If you need momentum, use less weight: side delts respond well to light loads.

Lifting with your shoulders

If your shoulders rise towards your ears, your traps take over. Keep them down.

Going above your shoulder

Stop at shoulder height.

FAQ

How much weight?

Light: with light dumbbells and good form you work your shoulder better than with heavy weight and swinging.
