Step by step

  1. Place the bench so the bar comes down to your lower chest.
  2. Set the safety stops just above your chest.
  3. Grip the bar slightly wider than your shoulders and rotate it to release it from the hooks.
  4. Lower under control to touch your chest, elbows at about 45–70°.
  5. Press until your arms are straight and rotate the bar to hook it when you finish.

Tip: Smith machine weights don't compare with a free bar: log your numbers for each separately.

Common mistakes

Bench in the wrong spot

If the bar comes down to your neck or stomach, move the bench before starting.

Elbows flared out

Same as with a free bar: tuck your elbows.

Not using the stops

They're the Smith machine's big advantage. Always set them.

Sets and reps

Guide ranges. Start with a weight where the last rep is hard but your technique holds.

FAQ

Is the Smith machine better or worse than a free bar?

Neither: it's easier to control and safer without a spotter; the free bar works stability more.
